Week in Geek Edition 1

June 30th 2016

Published by Stacey Driver

Last week was a crazy busy week with three major events for the team to focus on as well as day to day activities.

  • London Tech Week
  • National Women in Engineering Day
  • Liverpool Makefest

If you follow us on social media I think you will be able to agree that we had a lot of fun! So let’s break down exactly what went on at each event for you.

London Tech Week

London Technology week is a week-long festival of events celebrating the entire technology ecosystem and is organised by UBM EMEA and London & Partners, alongside founding partners Tech London Advocates and ExCeL London, and strategic partners UKTI, techUK and Tech City UK. Every aspect of the rapidly developing technology market is represented and discussed throughout some 400 events. This year the festival welcomed 43 000 attendees. Ragworm was delighted to be one of them! London has positioned itself as the beating heart of a global digital economy and has rocketed from an unknown player to a leading force in under a decade. Events covered topics such as :- setting up in the UK and London, Developing talent and the future, IOT and the development of a connected home, Financial technology and the changing landscapes, legislation and IP protection for brands and products, partnerships between innovation and science and much more. Everything you needed to know if you are running a technology centred business in 2016. Here at HQ we made the most of the opportunity to access high profile speakers and expert advice and attended events in the evening across London. We can’t wait to put ideas into action!

National Women in Engineering Day

National Women in Engineering Day (NWED) is a day to celebrate women working and studying in STEM fields across the UK and the globe. Now in its third year, NWED is celebrated annually on 23rd June. With only 7% of workers in these fields recorded as women, it is vital that we promote these careers and celebrate their diverse, challenging and ever changing scope. The UK, in particular, has one of the greatest invention and export industries. To continue to develop outstanding products and make life changing discoveries it remains of key importance that STEM education and career choices are promoted equally to all individuals. Computer Weekly and the Daily Telegraph both published lists of the TOP 50 Women in Tech, receiving over 900 nominations To celebrate and spread the word of NWED2016 Ragworm interviewed five hugely inspirational figures within our immediate network. Liverpool Makefest:

The week was rounded off with team packing up the Orange Transport Machine and heading up north to the sunny realms of Liverpool! Liverpool Makefest brought together some 200 exhibitors made up of talented designers and Tech Extraordinaires in one place to share their delectable products and creations with an enthusiastic audience. The free festival was held at Liverpool Central library and showed off how science, technology and the arts are shaping the world around us and our futures. Teaming up with Comicon added a splash of colour, fun and awesomeness to the event that was completely unexpected. Flying a drone, exploring 3D printing and laser cutting, getting to grips with the Raspberry Pi and making things with Arduinos were just a handful of the activities that took place during the course of Saturday 25th June. Ragworm is privileged to be able to exhibit at events such as this and we send our huge thanks to the team of organisers. They often go unmentioned after such an event but it is no walk in the park! The team give up their time voluntarily to ensure that, whole communities have access to such events without charge. It is a marvellous event and long may it continue! Didn’t manage to get to this one? Why not check out Manchester MakeFest held at the Museum of Science and Industry. Find out more here

Ragworms’ Final thoughts:

Now is an amazing time to be involved in such a powerful industry. The speed of change is getting faster and faster as we make each groundbreaking discovery. Business and individual vision are more important than strategy. By getting out in the world and exploring your ecosystem you can strengthen your business, your outlook, and overall your offerings! Be a leader in this world – share your vision with others and take them on a journey with you. What you actually physically do can always change and adapt as your journey develops but know where you are going. Events such as those we took part in this week can help you to clarify these important foundations of your business or idea. Being active in your industry and with your target audience is essential in all avenues of business but particularly in technology, engineering, design, and innovation. Know your audience and co-create with your target market. Do not design in isolation. Need help being linked with the right people? Then why not contact the team and HQ and find out how we can help you expand your network.
